The raccoon (Procyon lotor) is the largest member of the procyonid family, typically weighing in at 8-20 lbs (3.5 – 9 kg). They are usually nocturnal and their diet is omnivorous – consisting mostly of invertebrates, but also some vertebrates and plants. They are native to North America, but have been introduced to Europe, the Caucasus region and Japan.
Raccoons are known for their intelligence, remembering solutions to various tasks for as long as 3 years. A captive raccoon can live up to 20 years, but their life expectancy is much shorter in the wild at only 1.8 to 3.1 years, with unnatural causes such as hunting and vehicular accidents making the bulk of the difference.
