The construction of the wall is very symbolic of his time in power, as he abandoned the expansionist and conquest policies of his predecessor Trajan and focused on defensive and domestic projects.

He personally visited almost every province of the Empire, and some of the notable domestic projects he pursued included increasing the training and preparedness of the military, rebuilding the Pantheon, constructing the Temple of Venus and Roma, and possibly even restored the Serapeum of Alexandria.

He reigned for 21 years, and died in his villa at the age of 62, succumbing to his failing health.
