Ancient Greek Gnathian Epichysis Vessel
Dating back to ca. 325–300 BCE, this is a stunning Ancient Greek epichysis vessel!
Named for the ancient Greek city state Gnathia, located in the Magna Graecia region of Italy, this style of pottery is visually striking and easily recognizable in museum collections around the world.
With its beautiful ornamentation, and very restricted spout, it is believed that these pottery epichysis vessels were intended to hold expensive liquids. These may have included oils and fragrances that needed only minimal application to be effective.
This particular 6.5" tall epichysis even features two lion heads at the juncture between the handle and spout.
