This is a real, contemporary, overmodeled human skull from the Iatmul peoples of the Sepik River, Papua New Guinea! 

The Iatmul people would adorn the skulls of their ancestors with clay, shells and sometimes even human hair to create a likeness of the deceased. Fine, traditional, painting techniques would then be applied to resemble the markings worn in life.

These skulls would be set atop figures during funerary ceremonies or utilized as marionettes atop poles during fertility rituals.
