Cowries are a group of sea snails that have a long history of use by humans.

For centuries, these shells were used as currency in regions of Africa, India and China.

They were also used historically by the Ojibway as sacred objects, which lead to the naming of Whiteshell Provincial Park in Manitoba, Canada. Their use of cowry so far inland likely indicates the existence of an extensive, ancient, trade network.

Today they are still worn as jewelry, and often used while crafting charms and ornaments. In some cultures they are viewed as symbols of fertility, birth, womanhood, luck or wealth.
