Dating back to ~49-48BCE, this is a real Ancient Roman elephant denarius!
To showcase his power after triggering the Great Roman Civil War, Julius Caesar ordered his military mint to produce these silver coins depicting a triumphant elephant crushing a snake beneath its feet.
The reverse of the coin depicts items relevant to Caesar's position of Pontifex Maximus: a culullus (ritual cap), a simpulum (a long-handled ladle used during sacrifices and share libations), an aspergillum (a brush used to sprinkle holy water) and a securis (a double-handed, animal-headed, axe).
This silver coin measures ~.75" diameter and weighs 3.88g.
