This is a fantastic example of Herkimer diamonds in their original dolostone matrix!
Mined in Herkimer County, New York, these beautiful water-clear and double-terminated quartz crystals are highly desirable for any collection.
The life of these crystals began 495 million years ago in a shallow sea, when quartz sand, organic materials and pyrite became trapped in a rock formation of dolomite and calcite.
The matrix measures ~5.5" (14cm) wide, 4.5" (11.5cm) tall, 2.5" (6.4cm) thick.
The largest cluster of Herkimer diamonds has an exposed dimension of .75" (1.9cm) x .5" (1.3cm) and the smaller, perfect, specimen measures .5" (1.3cm) long!
