This is a real cradleboarded child skull, from the Nazca culture of Peru!
Dating back between 100BCE and 800CE, it is believed that this skull belonged to a 4 year old child.
In what is now the Ica Region of Peru, these peoples practiced cranial modification (cradle-boarding) on their infants to create abnormal skull development. This would typically be done between 1-6 months after birth when the human skull is most pliable.
It is believed that the altering of a child's head could be to denote higher status in a society or follow pseudoscientific beliefs that it would enhance the function of the brain.
