Native to the Arctic Circle, the polar bear (Ursus maritimus) ,along with the similarly sized Kodiak, is the largest bear and land carnivore in the world, getting as heavy as 1500 lbs (680 kg). They are great swimmers, which makes them quite effective at hunting other species in the Arctic.
The polar bear possesses a highly developed sense of smell, allowing it to detect its favorite prey, seals, at up to a mile and a half away. The average lifespan of a polar bear is 15 – 18 years.
